Why Does Childbirth Hurt?
Childbirth is supposed to be one of the most painful experiences a woman can experience. That's saying quite a lot when you consider many of the things women have to endure during their lives. Why is this? Why is it so painful, so dangerous, so stressful that many women die while giving birth. Of course, this mostly only applies to non-industrialized nations nowadays, but even as recently as the early Twentieth Century it was not uncommon for a woman to die while having a baby.
Surely, there is a reason for this. Let's look to the bible (this is a bible study after all) to see what it says about this subject.
"Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee." ~ Gensis 3:16
A slightly better translation, from the New International Version of the bible goes:
"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." ~ Genesis 3:16 NIV
Basically, in one fell swoop and in one verse, this just and kind god nails women to the board and basically curses them in a number of ways. First of all, they will have sorrow while giving birth, and great pain during childbearing. So that answers our question. Going on, god curses women in that they will always long for (desire) their husbands, trying to be with them and want them, but the man will always be above the woman. Basically the slave is being made to fall in love with the owner. Nice god, nice. He obviously has a sense of irony.
Why is woman being cursed? Because she disobeyed god. She didn't do what he said, just as he (being omniscient) knew she wouldn't, and now he's cursing her to death while giving birth. What's worse? He later commands mankind to go forth and multiply (Genesis 1:22). At that point, he has cursed woman to suffer during childbirth, and then orders women to have as many children as possible. That's great!
This god is an expert at torture! Maybe that's why he's such a supporter of torture. After all, he created it, right?
