Judge Not, Lest Ye Be....Oh...Wait, Nevermind.
We have all heard the phrase, "Judge not, lest ye be judged yourself." Most would associate that phrase with the Bible, and they would be mostly correct. The actual quote is:
"Judge not, that ye be not judged." ~ Matthew 7:1
Oh, wait...no, it is, "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged." ~ Luke 6:7. It's hard to keep things straight when the silly book says things over and over, with different words and in different ways, but I suppose both say the same thing: You should not judge, or you yourself will be judged.
We see similar statements elsewhere, such as in James 4:12, "Who art thou that judgest another?" There are other places, but three examples should be enough. It is clear that we should not pass judgment on other people, or we ourselves will be judged...whatever that means.
However, just like ninety-five percent of everything in the Bible, the Bible tells us to do the complete opposite in other passages! That's right, the Bible contradicts itself! I am sure that if you are a regular reader of this blog, you are not surprised, as this blog has plenty of posts about the endless contradictions in the book.
"In righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour." ~ Leviticus 19:15
So, we are allowed to judge. Not only does this passage tell us to judge, but it even gives specific instructions. We are to judge in a righteous way. Okay, okay. I can hear some of you already clamoring away that, "That is the OLD TESTAMENT! That doesn't apply!"
Fine...here's a few from the New Testament:
"But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." ~ 1 Corinthians 2:15.
Sweet...I think I will become a Christian. According to this, those that are spiritual can judge everything, but cannot be judged themselves! THAT'S where all the self-righteousness comes from, right there.
"For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person." ~ 1 Corinthians 5:12-13
Well, there is more from First Corinthians. What a great, love-spreading book. It's ironic that this is also the book that tells us all the traits love has. On one hand, it tells us that love trusts, is kind, protects, does not envy, and is not proud. On the other hand, it tells us to pass judgment on anyone that doesn't believe in the same fairy-tale as you do. Leave it to the Bible to come up with such a duplicitous message, and all within on book of the bible.
Here is another reason to be a Christian:
"Know ye not that we shall judge angels?" ~ 1 Corinthians 6:3
How cool is that! Watch out Michael and Gabriel. When I get to Heaven, I am going to judge those wings right off your back!
